Jaaskelainen signed in November 1997 from VPS in Finland for an initial £100,000, which could rise to £350,000. A junior international in Finland Colin Todd had been watching him and snapped him up after he had a trial with Norwich. Jussi's full international debut came in March 1998 when he kept a clean sheet in the country's 2-0 win in Malta. Jussi started the 1998/99 season in fine form but as the season went on Jaaskelainen began to lose his form and became inconsistent. A bad performance during the important clash at Sunderland led to the arrival of Steve Banks. After starting the 1999/2000 season as 3rd choice keeper Jaaskelainen established himself as Bolton's 1st choice keeper making the save of the season against Charlton in the dying minutes of the F.A cup Quarter Final.
