Robbie Elliott became the Wanderers record signing when the trotters
paid £2.5 million to bring him to the Reebok in July 1997 from Newcastle, Peter Beardsley
followed him in August. He is capable of playing in either the left back position or the
left side of midfield. He signed professional for his hometown club Newcastle in April
1991. He made his League debut the previous month, and went on to play 79 league games for
the Toon Army. He went on to win both England youth and two under 21 caps despite the
early part of his career being affected by injury. He grabbed his first goal for The
Magpies in a 3-1 win at Filbert Street against Leicester on the opening day of the 1994/95
